What Is Open-Mindedness?

Open-mindedness is a willingness to consider new ideas and perspectives, even if they differ from one’s own beliefs or values. Being open-minded means being receptive to new information and experiences, and being willing to revise one’s views in light of new evidence or arguments. It is an important skill to have in any field, as it allows individuals to be more adaptable and open to change and to learn and grow from new experiences. Open-mindedness is also often associated with creativity, as it allows individuals to be more open to new ideas and ways of thinking that can lead to creative solutions to problems.

Open-mindedness allows you to not have total control over everything you experience. Just as there is no room for something new in a crowded room, there is no room for others or new concepts in the busy space of the mind.

 

How to Improve Your Open-Mindedness Skills

  1. Be aware of your prejudices

Prejudices affect the way we interpret information and can lead to judgments or stereotypes. Being aware of your prejudices is the first step to overcoming them and opening up to new ideas.

When you receive new information, think about how your biases influence its interpretation. If you feel ready to accept the additional information, think about how it may confirm your existing beliefs. If your reaction is to reject the information, think about what stops you from accepting it.

  1. Consider the opposite point of view

Open-mindedness involves the ability to question not only others but also yourself. Think of topics on which you have a strong opinion, and then imagine the point of view of the person on the other side of the argument. Try to think of at least three reasons why someone might have an opposite view. You can also read a newspaper article or book about someone who has an opposite view to you.

Being able to imagine the other side’s point of view, even if you stick to your previous beliefs, will help you to see the issue more subtly and be more open-minded when considering other issues.

The generous interpretation is the process of assuming that people have good intentions. It goes beyond simply taking into account the views of others and actively seeking positive justifications for one’s actions.

For example, if a colleague does something that upsets you, think about the situation from their perspective. Think about their motivation or what is going on in their life that has influenced their action. The most generous interpretation suggests that the colleague had good intentions or was busy with other things, even if their action upset you. It is perfectly normal to acknowledge your negative feelings about the colleague’s action while trying to be sympathetic towards them.

  1. Ask questions

Open-minded people tend to ask questions rather than express their opinion or argue. You can practice asking more questions in almost any conversation.

You can ask more questions and on more emotionally intense topics. If a colleague starts talking about a political topic on which you have opposing views, ask questions about their point of view rather than arguing with them. Try to learn rather than immediately defend your opinion. If you decide to argue with your colleague afterward, you can both have a more complex conversation about the subject, rather than just arguing.

  1. Think of a neutral point of view

Try to think of possible reasons for a neutral viewpoint on a controversial subject. You can also ask a friend if you can talk about the issue while they listen and summarise what you are saying. This technique, with someone else repeating what you say, can help you to see the situation more objectively.

  1. Make new connections

Networking with people who have different views on life is a good way to become more open-minded. Look for connections with people you don’t meet often or haven’t spoken to in a long time. For example, you might invite a colleague to lunch because you have never spent time with them outside of work. Even if you have very little in common, take the opportunity to learn more about their interests and personality.

  1. Get to know the different media

It’s easier to consider other points of view when you know more about the people who may have those points of view. Reading books, watching films, listening to podcasts, or being exposed to other forms of media and art can all help us to imagine or empathize with different points of view.

Look for media and art produced by people with different perspectives or experiences. For example, you might read a book written by someone from another religion or watch a TV program about people from another country.
