US Stock Market: NYSE Holidays and Market Hours

In this article, we shall be highlighting different NYSE Holidays and the market hours so that investors will be aware of them. It is not a gainsay that New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) plays important role not just is the US Stock market alone. Whatever happens in the New York Stock Exchange has the tendency of affecting the global stock market.

So, why do we need to choose NYSE Holidays and the market hours as a topic? According to Tradimo, “Share prices often rally ahead of long weekends and three-day holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Independence Day in the US.” It was explained further that the rally has been attributed to simple optimism and high spirits among traders. This fact was buttressed by Stockcharts in one of its articles where it was affirmed that historical research shows that stock prices often behave in a specific manner in each of the two trading days preceding stock market holidays. Quantpedia also talked about pre-holiday effects by referring to it as a calendar anomaly in equities as there is tendency for a stock market to gain on the day that precedes the stock market holiday.  Quantpedia even went further by saying that research shows that market return during pre-holiday days is often more than 10 times larger than the average return during normal trading days.  Therefore, if stock market holidays can have such impact on share prices, it makes sense that stock traders should know only be concerned about the market market hours. They should also know exactly what days are stock market holidays so that they can plan ahead.

What are the US Stock Market Holidays?

US Stock Market Holidays are the days that the stock markets in the United States of America are closed. This means that there will not be trading activities on such days. It is not only peculiar to US Stock Market alone, it applies to all the stock market all around the world. The only difference is that each stock exchange observe their own holidays as it relates to the holidays in their specific countries. For instance, NYSE Holidays will be different from NSE Holidays. Therefore, if you an international investors and you trade in different stock exchanges, you will need to be conversant with the stock market holidays in respective countries.

NYSE Holidays

NYSE Holidays are in agreement with US public holidays. If you are an active trader on New York Stock Exchange, you will be conversant that the Exchange comprises NYSE American, NYSE Arca Equities, NYSE Arca Options, NYSE American Options, NYSE National, NYSE Bonds. Therefore, it is important to note that all these NYSE markets observe the same NYSE Holidays. However, on any day that NYSC closes early, NYSE Arca Equities hours may change slightly as a result of its extended trading day. To some extent, one can say that NYSE holidays are predictable as they usually agree with US holidays. In this article, we shall cover the NYSE Holidays for four years from 2017 to 2020. But we will break them into two years period each. I believe that the table will provide answers for people asking the following question.
