How to List Multiple Positions at One Company on Resume

How to List Multiple Positions at One Company on Resume

A good resume is self-explanatory because the layout divides information into sections. It makes it easy to list all your education qualifications in one place and your work experience in another. Each work experience is added as a separate entry with the name of each employer, date, and location. What if you got promoted within the same company or changed job positions? Is it important to highlight each job position you have held? Of course! Every sign of career growth should be indicated on your resume.

No matter how little the move or change in roles is, adding it to your resume proves to future employers that you are a top performer and that your former workplace valued and recognized your hard work by giving you a promotion or even a lateral move like changing your job title and role. It is also a testimonial that you were determined enough to work your way up the corporate ladder. Citing all the roles you handled in one company shows that you are a fast learner with a diverse skillset which makes it easy for you to handle any task given to you. Therefore, endeavor to list all the positions you held in a company no matter how inconsequential some of the roles might seem.

We have already established that it is important to list multiple positions in one company on your resume. However, we have not yet answered the question it raises: How? Many candidates have wondered how to make all the entries without making the resume look jam-packed with too much information. This article will be telling you three ways to make your entry.

Adding All the Positions Under One Entry

In this method, you stack all the positions you’ve held from the highest and most recent to the very first, all under the company name, location, the date you started work, and when you ended or to present if you still work there. You also need to add the dates you started and ended work in each position. This approach works best when you held many positions in the organization. To highlight each growth, add descriptions of the roles and responsibilities you handle in each position. Mention that you were promoted and the reason why. A resume is not the right place to be modest. Talk about your accomplishments and contributions in each role too. Use bullet points to list them. To illustrate, below is an example of an employee who moved from being a factory hand to working in a sales and marketing position.

XYZ COMPANY – Lagos, Nigeria, June 2017 to present

Brand Retail Executive, June 2019 to present

  • Promoted to a full-time staff for outstanding performance.
  • Define the company’s sales goals.
  • Make major decisions involving the company.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day running of the organization’s retail section.
  • Responsible for making sure the company not only remains profitable but exceeds financial expectations.
  • Interview, hire, and manage casual marketing staff.
  • Exceeded the sales record for the second quarter of 2019 by 90% and therefore bagged the “Employee of the Year” award.

Merchandiser, August 2018 to June 2019

  • Moved from the factory to being a casual staff in the sales and marketing department.
  • Marketed company products to retailers and end-users.
  • Served as team leader and extensively participated in the company’s promotional activities to ensure visibility of products in all retail stores.

Factory Worker, June 2017 to August 2018

  • Worked in the company’s soap factory, picking up products off the sealing machine and packaging them in cartons.
  • Assisted in loading the finished and packaged goods into vehicles.

What if you want to list all the roles under one entry but they are too multiple? Then you can follow the same process as shown above but make the entry brief and concise by summarizing only the earlier and minor roles. This method saves space and makes your document look neat. Here’s an instance:

XYZ COMPANY – Lagos, Nigeria, June 2016 to present

Sales Manager, June 2018 to present

  • (Add roles and achievements)

Brand Retail Executive, August 2017 to June 2018

  • (Add roles and achievements)

Other Positions Held: Intern, Merchandiser, and Factory Worker, June 2016 to August 2017

Listing Lateral Moves

A lateral move happens when your job title or role is changed in a company to a similar one within the same department. When listing the positions in your resume, stack them together, starting from the most recent. Since the roles are similar and within the same organization, you do not have to create different bullet points to list achievements and responsibilities.

Example:

XYZ COMPANY – Lagos, Nigeria

Branch Manager, June 2020 to present

Branch Coordinator, June 2019 to June 2020

  • (Add achievements and responsibilities)

Making Separate Entries For Each Position

This means listing the company more than once. Separate entries are necessary and should occur on your resume only when you leave a company and then return after some time to another role. A resume should always be in chronological order, from the most recent to the first. Therefore, list the current place you are working at first followed by the place or places you worked at when you left. When it’s time to mention the position you held in the company before leaving, make another entry like you were mentioning a new employer.

Example:

Here’s what your resume should look like when you are making two separate entries.

XYZ COMPANY – Lagos, Nigeria

Brand Retail Executive, June 2017 to present

  • Define the company’s sales goals.
  • Make major decisions involving the company.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day running of the organization’s retail section.
  • Responsible for making sure the company not only remains profitable but exceeds financial expectations.
  • Interview, hire and manage casual marketing staff.
  • Exceeded the sales record for the second quarter of 2019 by 90% and therefore bagged the “Employee of the Year” award.

ABC COMPANY – Abuja, Nigeria

Sales Representative, July 2015 to June 2017

  • Assisted the company in sales
  • Represented the company outside the place of business.

XYZ COMPANY – Lagos, Nigeria

Merchandiser, August 2013 to July 2015

  • Marketed company products to retailers and end-users.
  • Served as team leader and extensively participated in the company’s promotional activities to ensure visibility of products in all retail stores.
